Interview with Suga Roy on August 8th, 2018
Could you please introduce yourself for those who do not know you?
This is Leroy Moore aka Suga Roy, I was born in the parish of Clarendon in Jamaica where I grew up. I, Leroy Moore aka Suga Roy, is also a producer the name of my labels are Fire Ball Records and Crystal Ball Production.
I produced the “Wanga Riddim” which features “Good Cop” by Anthony B, “Caan Tan Yah” by Capleton, “Dem Love Me” by Jah Mason, and my song “Dance Nice Again”. I also produced the albums: “Hail The Comforter” by Luciano, “African Children” by Sizzla, “Honoring The Kings of Reggae” by Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew, “Universal Tribute To Gregory” by Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal, and “The Great Reggae Icons” and many more albums with Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew, as well as singles with other artists.
How did you get to form a band with Conrad Crystal & Zareb?
I, Suga Roy, was working with Conrad Crystal as a duo from 2003. Then I create the name Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew in 2012, and launched out the name in 2013 with the album “Meditation” by Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew. I then add Zareb to the group in 2015 with the single Shanty Town with Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew Zareb & Conrad Crystal featuring Busy Signal.
In 2016, you released the album “Honoring The Kings of Reggae”. I suppose it wasn’t easy to pick only 19 “classics” to cover, do you plan on working on a second volume?
Yes, it was not easy to choose 19 classics to cover because there are lots of classic songs out there in reggae music, so it take me a few months to figure out the right tracks to put on the album “Honoring The Kings Of Reggae”.No, I don’t plan to work on the second volume.
So, what projects are you currently working on?
I am working on some new singles right now. All songs will be original. So everyone can look out for a new single coming out soon with Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew featuring Tarrus Riley. I know Reggae fans gonna love it.
You planned to toured Europe a couple months ago, how was it?
We were planing to tour Europe a few months ago with a new booking agency but they did not know how to get certain paper works done to let us come across europe . We apologize to our fans in Europe. So I want our fans to know that it was not Suga Roy & The Fireball Crew‘s fault but the fault of the booking agency. This experience teach us that we have to work with the right booking agency that know how to get things done.
Do you plan to come again soon? Where would you be touring?
I definitely have it in mind to come to Europe when promoters book us for shows, because we really love the vibes in Europe. The people are very nice and they really love and appreciate Reggae music.
Where would you love to perform?
Well, Suga Roy & Fireball Crew would go anywhere there is people who love reggae music. Right now, we are very excited to go and perform for the first time in Africa, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisuma, Kenya and Dubai. The tour will start on September 8, 2018.
What do you think about the current Reggae scene?
I love the movement with new Reggae artists in this time. I see they try to support each other and that is very good because if the industry was like this from long time, it would have been better for more talented youths that were left behind because they had no one to help them along the way.
A lot of artist that make their mark in Reggae music before pretend like they care for the youths but that is only when they are before the camera or on the radio, but if you could check there history in reggae music you can’t see no new talent that they uplift so that the world could see them.
