Throwback of the week: “Cherry Oh Baby Riddim”
The “Cherry Oh Baby Riddim” has originated from 1971’s Eric Donaldson‘s track of the same name, produced by Edward O’Sullivan ‘Bunny Striker’ Lee. Back in the 70’s, Eric won the Jamaica Independence Festival contest with this single. Consequently “Cherry Oh Baby” became a hit. It was not only a hit in Jamaica but also had a significant impact in the UK too. Indeed, UB40 and The Rolling Stones both covered this track.
During the 90’s, the riddim regained popularity as it’s been remade/re-leaked several times by producers such as Digital B, Dave Kelly & Donovan Germain, Steely & Clevie, King Jammys among others. Artists such as Admiral Tibett, Buju Banton, Freddie McGregor, Carleton, Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel and many more have voiced it.
It is a classic. So, make sure you check this out. Share and comment if you like it.
