Throwback of the week: “Power Cut Riddim” produced by Big Ship
The “Power Cut Riddim”, produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor for Big Ship and released in 2006, is one of the numerous Dancehall various-artist compilations of the Riddim Driven Series. It includes no less than 29 tracks (strictly raw, no version). It’s been released ten years ago, which also reminds me how fast time goes by.The “Power Cut Riddim” is a terrific Dancehall riddim. It’s one of my favorite riddims of the mid-2000’s. It’s a real bad man riddim. There’s no romantic love song on this riddim and if you’ve ever heard one, it probably is an unofficial track. From the very first bars of the intro you can tell this riddim is bad. And when I say bad, I mean bad like yard or bad like Michael Jackson (depending on your references). The short electric guitar lick of the intro is only a small insight of how epic this “Power Cut Riddim” is. It mainly consists of an uptempo military-driven drum line. On top of the beat, a set of staccato chords adds some more tension, which gives the beat an overall dangerous feel.I personally love the “Power Cut Riddim” and hopefully you do too. It features mad tracks like “Bush Kash” by Aidonia, “Rise Crime” by Mavado, “Rise di Machine” by Stein, “No Friend From Dem” by Mr Vegas and many more. For the record, the VP Records’ “Riddim Driven” series includes more than a 100 riddims. It’s a must-have in your Reggae music collection. So make sure you get this issue if you don’t have it yet. Do not hesitate to leave a comment below, and let us know what you think of this riddim.
