Throwback of the week: the “Kette Drum Riddim”, 1995
This week, I suggest that we relax to the sound of the Nyahbinghi-influlenced “Kette Drum Riddim”. For those who wonder what a “kette drum” is. It is not a misspelled “kettle drum” (also known as a “timpani”). It is a kind of nyahbinghi drums.
Thus, the riddim is mainly made of vividly vibrant nyahbinghi percussions and a simple guitar riff. It might sound a bit repetitive to some of you but it is also a way to enjoy a little more the creativity and flow of the artists had back then.
In 1995, producers Donovan Germain (Penthouse) and Bobby Dixon (Digital B) each released their own version of the “Kette Drum Riddim”. Both riddims sound relatively the similar, they just feature different artists. On one side we have Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Garnett Silk among others. On the other side, Shabba Ranks, Cobra, Morgan Heritage and more. I don’t know which one came out first though.
